Cultural Background: Mi’kmaq, Qalipu Band, Newfoundland and Labrador
Stephanie White is a Mi’kmaw artist residing in Newfoundland (Ktaqmkuk). She has instilled her love for the culture, as well as her love for art, in her 2 children, Lakelyn and Kai. She is involved in several indigenous associations, including a women’s drum group that frequently shares the culture with the community. She is a full time healthcare worker and whatever spare time she has is spent connecting with loved ones and nature. She became interested in arts and crafts at a very early age. Creating indigenous art grounds her and connects her to the past. She enjoys working with diverse media including painting, drawing, digital design, sewing, and photography. Her art includes working with furs, skins, leather and antler of seals, rabbits, moose, and caribou, porcupine quills, sinew, birch bark, feathers, and beads. A large part of her indigenous crafting involves working with the traditional medicines; sage, cedar, sweetgrass, and tobacco. She has also participated quite extensively in the performing arts of dance, music, film, and theatre.
